Joss Whedon on Mitt Romney.

And this is pretty much all you need to know about the up-coming election. Don’t forget to get out there and vote!

Season 6, Episode 22..AKA “Grave.” I mean, that’s not what it represents, but that’s where it comes from. And what it means, given the context of that episode.

#4. Buffy Summers

You always have a choice.

I love that Buffy is number 4 in her own show…

Well she was always so whiny and treated her friends like shit in between saving their lives and was overall kind of annoying. Plus her relationships. x_x;

My reasoning for Buffy being my fourth-favorite character is pretty simple: There are too many amazing characters on this show and my poor wee brain can’t take it all. I chose to rank them, though, and so that’s the order I ended up choosing.

But don’t misunderstand…I love Buffy.

I think she gets a lot of unwarranted hate. I think because she’s The Hero of the show, we are (consciously or not) harsher on her than on other characters. Despite my love for her, I know this is true about myself. I hold her to a higher standard. I expect her to make better decisions than everyone else. I applaud other characters for having half the nerve, half the bravery, and half the heart that Buffy has, and I criticize her for faltering even a little.

But I also try really hard to see the universe that Whedon created from her point of view—the POV of a young girl thrust into a destiny she didn’t choose, but who makes the best of it anyway. Who never gives up, who kicks ass, who is burdened and doomed and attacked, but who reaches out to help others at every turn.

You better believe if, at sixteen years old, I was chosen to save the world, I would have whined SO MUCH LOUDER than Buffy ever did. I think most of us would. I think the average teenager would fail miserably where Buffy succeeds and I think that matters.

Buffy, the character, was so, so important to me growing up. I rarely, if ever, saw women kicking butt, holding their own, leading armies, taking charge on TV or in movies. Buffy was absolutely my hero as a kid and she remains so now, even though I can certainly find her faults. So it’s not that I dislike Buffy, not at all. It’s that with Anya, Willow, Giles, and Buffy all in one show, it is impossible for me to rank them without making it look like I dislike some of them.
